Chapter 14

Sunday morning. Emily ran, Henry walked Spunky, and Maddy slept. A typical weekend morning. Brunch at the inn was becoming a habit.

When they arrived, Coralee had reserved a table for them.

“I hope your sister is enjoying the weekend with Frances and Drew,” said Coralee. “I sure miss her help.”

“She was excited about the big parade and craft fair they promised to take her to. It’s hard for my mother to let Amy out of her sight for too long. Not that I blame her a bit. They’re driving her back tonight.”

“If we find Brianna, maybe she’ll bring Ruth’s plan to fruition. She left money specifically earmarked for construction, left those preliminary plans, and Luisa is already working with Ruth’s architect.”

Henry said, “It shouldn’t take long to get the necessary permits. Construction could get started before the winter sets in.”

“And I followed up on the vote at the Town Hall meeting. The zoning law was amended to allow commercial business next to residential property in the case of something for the good of the community.”

Coralee said, “The Whites might argue that bringing drug addicts, drunks, and special needs adults into our community does more harm than good.”

“With the laws protecting those with disabilities, they wouldn’t have a leg to stand on,” Henry said. “Do you have blueberry French Toast today?”

“Of course. And I’ll pack a to-go portion for Maddy. I’ll send over the server with coffee.”

Luisa, Ruth’s assistant came over. “I saw you over here. Just wanted to say hello.”

“Are you eating alone?”

“With Ruth gone, I don’t know anyone else in this town. Coralee was gracious enough to let me stay here until I find another job.”

“Sit down and join us,” said Emily.

“Have you heard any updates on Ruth’s case?”

“The man who stood up at the book signing is in the clear. He has an alibi.” Emily debated mentioning what they’d found in Ruth’s journal.

“The one who claimed she stole his property from him?”

“That’d be the one. Coralee has been trying to find Ruth’s granddaughter. Did Ruth ever mention anything that could help us find her? Did you ever meet her?”

“No.”

“Did you know about the change in plans? To ax the Veteran’s hospital in lieu of an indie-living home? She must have had you help research it, right?”

“She wanted to leave a legacy behind. And get a tax break, to be honest. When I first started working for her, she was searching for ideas. I told her I had a relative, ex-army, who’d died waiting to get an appointment at a VA hospital.”

Henry said, “I can imagine. And those hospitals aren’t easily accessible if you live in certain areas. I have a patient in that predicament.”

“I guess I planted the seed. Then Ruth started dating the marine so she really hooked into the idea of a private VA hospital. I researched property prices and tax laws in several cities. That’s around the time Ruth was looking to buy herself a retirement home.”

Emily said, “And she decided on Sugarbury Falls.”

“Yes, she loved it here.
